What is Euro Petroleum Consultants' GSF Safety Award?

Gulf Safety Award

Recognising achievements in safety is incredibly important in an industry such as oil and gas as well as other manufacturing sectors where operations carry significant risk. Euro Petroleum Consultants' GSF Safety Award is a prestigious accolade that has been designed to honour those who have demonstrated improvements in safety, creating new opportunities to make the industry safer and more productive and to reduce the hazardous impact it has on the environment.

What is the award designed to do?

Promoting safe operations in industry is at the heart of the GSF Safety Award. It exists to recognise the company that has made progress in the field of safety, and which has found innovative ways of making lasting improvements to safety and health. This not only includes the health and safety of the business’ workers, but also the environment and with respect to improving productivity as a result. A number of key criteria are evaluated in order to determine who should be awarded the prize, including:

  • Improvement in performance
  • Cultural evolution
  • Extent of innovation
  • Stakeholder involvement
  • Management involvement

How is the winner decided?

The winner of the GSF Safety Award must be able to show quantifiable results with respect to improvements that have been made. These should be gauged through defined key performance indicators. The results of any operational management techniques or changes to safety programmes should not be temporary but enduring and significant.

What does the award seek to achieve?

Overall improvement in safety and involvement in this process at all levels, from management to stakeholders. Safety is defined as:

“Policies and procedures that ensure the safety and health of employees within a workplace, including hazard identification and mitigation, as well as safety training and education.”

Past winners

Last year’s nominees included ALBA, BAPCO, SADARA and SAUDI ARAMCO. The winner, Aluminium Bahrain (ALBA), introduced new initiatives in 2012 to radically change health and safety policies, procedures and programmes and clearly demonstrated major safety, operational and incident performance improvements. The programme was visibly driven and delivered from the top to all layers and stakeholders through regular CEO Town Hall Meetings. The award judges observed a visible, felt leadership displayed through contractor and community engagement, which succeeded in spreading the health and safety message to a wider range of audiences.

The Gulf Safety Forum

Potential candidates for the GSF Safety Award are drawn from those companies that attend the Gulf Safety Forum, which is focused on promoting safe operations across oil, gas, petrochemicals and manufacturing sectors. The next forum is scheduled for 25-26 March 2019 in Bahrain, during which the Euro Petroleum Consultants' GSF Safety Award will once again be presented to the company that has made the most visible and measurable progress in the field of safety over the past two years.
